A Little Resurrection Selina Nwulu Bloomsbury Poetry
AN IRISH TIMES BOOK OF THE YEARA Little Resurrection is the debut full-length collection from acclaimed poet Selina Nwulu. In these reflections on being and blackness, informed by empathy and intellectual curiosity, Nwulu melds the golden light of Senegal with the harsh winds of Yorkshire. Here, blackness itself is complicated, and the resonances of being are extended to offer an image of the self in a state of flux – a fugitive spirit battling the harm of erasure. In its profound joy, all the more powerful for being hard-won, A Little Resurrection heralds the branching out of an important trajectory in Anglophone poetry. Customs Solmaz Sharif Bloomsbury Poetry
Longlisted for the 2023 PEN/Jean Stein Book AwardLonglisted for the 2022 Brooklyn Public Library Book PrizeA New Yorker Essential Read of 2022A Publishers Weekly Best Book of 2022An NPR Best Book of 2022A Literary Hub Best Reviewed Poetry Collection of 2022_______________‘Witty and incisive… [Sharif] masterfully traverses the landscape of exile and all its complicated grief’ New York Times_______________The devastating second collection by Solmaz Sharif, author of Look, a National Book Award finalistWith Customs, Solmaz Sharif offers a series of poetic refusals, weighing nuanced questions about what it means to belong to a place. In the face of hard borders these poems seek a reckoning with the structures, in society, in language itself, by which these limits act on us.Sharif examines what it means to exist in the nowhere of the arrivals terminal; to navigate a continual series of checkpoints, officers, searches, and questionings that can become a relentless challenge; a mutating shibboleth.Through the poet\'s adept balancing of tonal and formal elements, these poems interrogate the ‘customs’ of the nation-state, of the English language, of the paces these systems put us through. But this work is not enjoined to a hopeless quest. Instead, the propulsive force that informs each line, each white space, and punctuation mark, is a powerfully galvanizing and healing force.Customs reminds us of the generative possibilities of restlessness, of seeking in each poem to refresh what it is a poem can be and do. Birds British Museum Press
The British Museum’s vast collections include wonderful images of birds from all over the world. Some are primarily decorative, whereas Thomas Bewick and the Japanese artist Kitagawa Utamaro chose to show birds in realistic detail, going about their daily lives. Other artists concentrate on scientific accuracy. The endless variety of birds, their freedom of sky, land and water, and especially their song have also inspired writers through the ages. Each striking image in this beautiful anthology is matched with a poem about the same species. Some were composed by our best-loved writers – including Shakespeare, Chaucer and Tennyson – and others have been selected from less familiar or even anonymous voices around the world. Now in a fresh new paperback format, this is an irresistible gift for anyone who loves birds. Σελίδες: 96, Έτος Έκδοσης: 0401, Διαστάσεις: 17x17cm

The Uncertain Land and Other Poems Patrick O’Brian HarperCollins
The first ever collection of poems by the acclaimed author of the Aubrey/Maturin series of Napoleonic naval adventures. As we have stood with Jack and Stephen on the deck of the Surprise and other ships, readers around the world have been transported to a place and time at once familiar and exotic, routine and dramatic. At all times, Patrick O’Brian’s deep knowledge of the period and profound empathy with the landscape of the sea has ensured there is always a firm hand on the tiller. The writer’s command of language is combined with the poet’s eye for visual detail to remarkable, and unforgettable effect. In The Uncertain Land and Other Poems, those same strengths are vividly displayed as O’Brian leads us on a journey through his own life. Here, we see a writer full of a young man’s spirit, challenging life, and here an author reflecting an old man’s melancholy at youth gone; in between, as he describes the places that he lived and people that he encountered, are poems of sly observation, wry humour and delicate beauty. Through more than 100 poems, O’Brian reveals insights into the world that captivated him while he was at work on a succession of novels that would reach its apotheosis in the Aubrey/Maturin adventures, which would secure his reputation as ‘the Homer of the Napoleonic Wars’. Intensely personal, allusive and unique, this is the work of a lifetime, published now for the very first time. Σελίδες: 176, Διαστάσεις: 12.9x12.9cm

The Heeding Rob Cowen Elliott & Thompson Limited
___ A year of looking, listening and noticing across four unique seasons and thirty-five beautifully illustrated poems. \'Dazzling, moving... A book that will touch many, and be given often: here, take this, you must read this.\' ROBERT MACFARLANE \'So vivid... A call out to our elemental relationship with love and nature. Beautiful.\' WILLEM DAFOE ___ The world changed in 2020. Gradually at first, then quickly and irreversibly, the patterns by which we once lived altered completely. The Heeding paints a picture of a year caught in the grip of history, yet filled with revelatory perspectives close at hand: a sparrowhawk hunting in a back street; the moon over a town with a loved-one\'s hand held tight; butterflies massing in a high-summer yard - the everyday wonders and memories that shape a life and help us recall our own. Across four seasons and thirty-five luminous poems and illustrations, Rob Cowen and Nick Hayes lead us on a journey that takes its markers and signs from nature and a world filled with fear and pain but beauty and wonder too. Collecting birds, animals, trees and people together, The Heeding is a profound meditation to a time no-one will forget. At its heart, this is a book that helps us look again, to heed: to be attentive to this world we share and this history we\'re living through, to be aware of how valuable and fragile we are, to grieve what\'s lost and to hope for a better and brighter tomorrow. ____ \'The Heeding speaks to us all, guiding us through the emotional journey the nation has gone through during the past year, with humour, pathos and forensically sharp portrayals of people and nature at a time like no other.\' Stephen Moss, author of The Robin \'Poignant and exquisite\' Lucy Jones, author of Losing Eden \'Vivid, beating, aching. The Heeding feels like both a eulogy and a defiant, wild challenge to go on. I loved it.\' Josie George, author of A Still Life \'It is rare to find a writer that is able to tease apart the threads that make up the fragile fabric of our loves, hopes and despairs with such care and humility. An exceptionally good book for an exceptionally bad time.\' Matt Gaw, author of Under the Stars Σελίδες: 112, Έτος Έκδοσης: 0720, Διαστάσεις: 12.9x12.9cm

Cats in Spring Rain Aya Kusch Chronicle Books

From the Edo to the Showa period, many artists turned their gaze toward an unlikely subject: their small feline companions. Closely observed portraits in words and ink elevate the everyday adventures of cats: taking a nap on a Buddha statue\'s lap, daintily eating a rice ball, courting the neighbor\'s cat. This curated collection of poems, prints, and paintings will leave you inspired to cultivate the serenity and wonder embodied by these creators - and by the cats themselves. More Salt than Diamond: Poems Aline Mello Andrews McMeel Publishing
An unflinching, heartbreaking collection of poetry about life in the U.S. as a Brazilian immigrant, Aline Mello’s debut poetry collection, More Salt Than Diamond, is a true testament to the power of finding a home.Born in Brazil, Aline Mello immigrated to the United States in 1997. Using her experience as an undocumented woman during a time of incredible flux and tension, Mello’s debut collection of poetry, More Salt than Diamond, speaks to her struggles while also addressing the larger cultural issues on an inclusive and global scale.Lyrical, moving, deeply emotional, and sometimes painful to read, Mello uses exquisitely sharp yet widely accessible language to crack open a life in multitudes. She shines a rare light on what it means to be a Brazilian immigrant in diaspora, stretched thin between borders and fraught family tension yet belonging nowhere. Aline is poised to not only change the face of Latinx poetry in years to come but to redefine the power of undocumented creators and artists. Σελίδες: 96, Έτος Έκδοσης: 0512, Διαστάσεις: 14.7x14.7cm

Discipline Jane Yeh Carcanet Press Ltd
A Poetry Book Society Spring 2019 Recommendation. In Discipline, her third collection, Jane Yeh depicts a haunting and hilarious variety of lives, from an endangered young rhinoceros to the denizens of the 1980s New York club scene. These multifaceted poems explore what identity isn\'t and is, as performance, as struggle, as change, as art, with penetrating wit, channeling the voices of outsiders, artists, misfits, and others. Discipline inhabits the space between the real and the surreal, a mash-up of deadpan humour and heartbreaking imagery where novelty T-shirts and lady astronaut centaurs can coexist. The poems are triggered by videos, paintings and installations by contemporary artists, animals and city life. They bristle with striking details and observations. Imaginary landscapes converge with episodes from recent history: power, resistance and the structures of oppression are seen inexorably in operation. These miniature dramas perform their own autopsies: `Sweet, then sour. My lips the colour of Doubt\'. Σελίδες: 64, Διαστάσεις: 13.5x13.5cm

Beyond the Barbed Wire: Selected Poems Abdellatif Laabi Carcanet Press Ltd
Finalist for the Neustadt International Prize for Literature 2020. Winner of an English PEN Award. Beyond the Barbed Wire is a selection of work by Morocco\'s greatest living poet. Abdellatif Laabi\'s poetry and literary activism has inspired a generation of writers and thinkers, and it resulted in his decade-long imprisonment. This volume gives a career-spanning overview of Laabi\'s poetry, from the late 1960s to the 2010s. It includes a generous selection of the prison-writings of the 1970s, poems that speak from \'beyond the borders of what is human\', as the poet writes, a hinterland of physical and emotional torture, in which hunger strikes are \'the only weapon we\'ve left\'. Among these is a poem addressed to the poet\'s cell, which is \'right here / inside me / like a second body\', and another written piecemeal to friends on the outside and later reassembled. Beyond the Barbed Wire pays testament to the human need to speak in the face of censorship, that \'epic of silence\'. These poems, Laabi\'s \'bitter fruits of the murderous twilight\', renew the possibility of a poetry that is genuinely urgent, necessary: a poetry of anger, anguish, love, wit, and hope, touched by a philosopher\'s vision and perspicuity. The book includes an interview with the poet in which he discusses his practice, his views on education, his beliefs about a poet\'s duty, the influence of his parents, and his optimism. With Laabi\'s renewed prominence in the Moroccan intellectual scene following the Arab Spring, and with a new generation of artists and activists looking to him as a source of inspiration, this book shows why Laabi is more than Morocco\'s leading poet, but also a guiding cultural and political force. A Map Towards Fluency Lisa Kelly Carcanet Press Ltd
Longlisted for the Michael Murphy Memorial Poetry Prize 2021. A Map Towards Fluency, Lisa Kelly\'s first collection, considers words, the power they impart, the power their absence withholds. Forgetting, mis-hearing, mis-remembering all challenge the imagination to find ways round and ways through. `The idea of fluency interests me - and whether we can ever claim fluency in any language.\' Her mother speaking Danish - which she cannot herself understand - is familiar and yet alienating: how Danish can she herself be when she cannot hear her mother\'s tongue with understanding? Her own attempts with British Sign Language are another challenge, a form of translation of sense in the absence of sound. `I have to work hard to listen and this requires me to place you to my right side, to watch your lips, to watch your hands, to watch your gestures. How ca form not matter?\' The poems touch on these themes in various ways, not least in what they do with form. Σελίδες: 112, Διαστάσεις: 13.5x13.5cm

Nineveh Zohar Atkins Carcanet Press Ltd
Nineveh takes its modernist bearings from Edmond Jabes, Paul Celan and Yehudah Amichai; but also, merrily, from John Ashbery and Frank O\'Hara. Zohar Atkins\'s poems offer humour and hospitality alongside deep learning and enigmatic, mystical theophany. The division between secular and religious is blurred, the two coexist in a generous exchange. The Bible is near at hand but rendered unfamiliar in the combination of anachronism with classical allusion. The poems produce jarring, contemporary Midrashim - interpretative retellings of canonical tales. Cain and Abel appear as business executives, Ishmael is a Palestinian dying in an Israeli hospital, Rachel and Leah are the projected identities of a demented Jacob, and God is a perfectionist who procrastinates by binge-watching TV. These poems are for intellectuals disenchanted with intellectualism and for seekers and sensualists in search of a renewing approach to language. Scholar and rabbi, Atkins has learned that poetry and not erudition offers a securer saving power. Σελίδες: 96, Διαστάσεις: 13.5x13.5cm

Afterwardness Mimi Khalvati Carcanet Press Ltd
A 2019 Poetry Book Society Winter Wild Card. A Sunday Times Book of the Year 2019. Ever since her first Carcanet book, In White Ink (1991), Mimi Khalvati has been drawn to the sonnet form. In Afterwardness its pull became irresistible. She has created in this unprogrammatic series, mixing memory, history, daily life, all her intersecting geographies and cultures, a self-portrait in all her moods, anxieties and delights. The sonnet form is stretched in all sorts of fruitful directions. Just as she adapted the ghazal form to English use, here she puts the Petrarchan sonnet to striking, unfamiliar use, widening the possibilities of the form. The poems are rich with Khalvati\'s personal history, her Iranian origins, her long years in Great Britain. The poems play between cultures, ancestral and acquired. Diary of the Last Man Robert Minhinnick Carcanet Press Ltd
Wales Book of the Year 2018. Winner of the 2018 Roland Mathias Poetry Award. Shortlisted for the 2017 T.S. Eliot Prize. The opening poem sequence, \'Diary of the Last Man\', sets the tone for Robert Minhinnick\'s book, a celebration of the dwindling Earth, an elegy, a caution. His Wales is a touchstone; other landscapes and cityscapes are tried against it, with its erratic weather, its sudden changes of mood, \'a black tonic\'. The sequence remembers all the geographies of his earlier work, old and new world, but now unpeopled and the lonely spirit free to go anywhere, do anything, but meaning with mankind has drained away. Yet still alive, and still with language, registering. The rest of the book is filled with voices: of children, of rivers, terrorists, magicians; and voices translated from the Welsh, and from Turkish and Arabic, shared, enriching with their difference, their other worlds. History washes over and washes up on the strand of this Welsh book. It is seen and recognised, it begins to be transformed. In the long concluding poem, \'The Sand Orchestra\', the poet returns to his own voice, and to the voice of a Bechstein piano abandoned in the open air, played now by nature, its winds and sand. The last man, who has been looking for Ulysses, is the very man he has been looking for. Σελίδες: 88, Διαστάσεις: 13.5x13.5cm

Billy Letford\'s Dirt revels in the fallow, the tainted, the off , and the unloved. The poems embrace a good life stitched together with bad circumstances, bungled chances, missed callings. Whether loitering on the street corner, \'poackets ful eh ma fingers\', or stumbling from a bar \'like a monkey in the jungle of traffic, stinking, wild and free\', the characters in Letford\'s poems deliver one thing in spades: heart. \'On Friday I visit my seventy-seven-year-old granny. It\'s not a surprise.\' Letford\'s words are lightly worn yet carefully measured; they move between English and Scots, lyrical and concrete, accumulating what the poet has described as an array of textures. Resisting modernity\'s unearthly glare, it is a life with grain, with grit, \'rotten with wonder\', that Letford seeks. The poems dig for a grace within dirt\'s humble endurance. \'There\'s dignity there. Lay yourself open.\' Σελίδες: 72

Ivor Gurney: Selected Poems P.J. Kavanagh OxfordPoets
Ivor Gurney (1890-1937) now takes a place among the English poets. His range is wide, including the First World War, in which he served as an infantry private, the passionate celebration of his native Gloucestershire, and fears of the mental imbalance which led to his eventual confinement in a mental hospital. Out of these experiences, he made a poetry unique, vigorous, musical, and direct. This selection of over 150 of his poems, was made by the poet P.J. Kavanagh from his edition of the \"Collected Poems of Ivor Gurney\". It is reissued now, with a few corrected readings, and with a Chronology and Introduction to Gurney\'s life, by P.J. Kavanagh. Forms of Distance Bei Dao Anvil Press Poetry
This work is a Poetry Book Society recommended translation. \"Forms of Distance\" is Bei Dao\'s second bilingual collection since his enforced exile from China in 1989. Michael Hofmann described the first, \"Old Snow\", as \'the work of one of the great poets of our time\', and John Cayley wrote in the \"Times Literary Supplement\" that \'in a sense he is the only contemporary Chinese poet who is knowable for the non-specialist...we can hear the maturing poetic voice of a highly talented, individual Chinese writer.\' Σελίδες: 96

The Axion Esti Odysseus Elytis Anvil Press Poetry
When Odysseus Elytis was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, the Swedish Academy\'s citation singled out \"The Axion Esti\", first published in 1959, as \'one of twentieth-century literature\'s most concentrated and richly faceted poems.\' It can be seen both as a secular oratorio, reflecting the Greek heritage and the country\'s revolutionary spirit, and also as a kind of autobiography, in which the spiritual roots of the poet\'s very individual sensibility are set in the wider philosophical context of the Greek tradition. In his evocation of eternal Greece, his vision of the war and its aftermath, and his concluding celebration of human life, Elytis is a true voice of our age A- a deeply personal lyric poet who speaks for humanity at large. Farm by the Shore Thomas A. Clark Carcanet Press Ltd
Shortlisted for the 2017 Saltire Society Poetry Book of the Year Award. In Farm by the Shore, Thomas A Clark continues his investigations into the landscape and culture of the Scottish highlands and islands. His brief notations and fragments embody the precarious balance between sea and land, wilderness and civilisation, while everything is played out in a context of weather. The spaces between the poems, which both link and divide them, are shades of quiet, indications of time or distance, or graphs of the vagaries of attention. In such a climate, to farm, or walk, or write, is to persist. You come to one thing and then another. Σελίδες: 104, Διαστάσεις: 13.5x13.5cm
