Ο Burroughs στο `Μία στις Χίλιες`, το τελευταίο fiction βιβλίο του, είναι ολιγόλογος, τα λέει όλα σε λίγες σελίδες, τέσσερα πέντε πράγματα συγκεκριμένα· χωρίς χαοτικά ανοίγματα στο γράψιμο, δίχως εκτεταμένες αισθητικές εμπειρίες που σχίζουν σαν τρυφερές λάμες τοπία μέσα μας για να φανερώσουν πίσω τους άλλα ακόμα πιο σκοτεινά. Σ’ αυτό το απολαυστικό µικρό δοκίµιο ο Σοπενχάουερ αναλύει µια σειρά τεχνάσµατα που µπορεί να βοηθήσουν κάποιον να επικρατήσει σε µια αντιπαράθεση ανεξάρτητα από το αν έχει δίκιο ή άδικο και ανεξάρτητα από την ουσία του ζητήµατος. Οι σοφιστείες και οι παραπλανητικές µέθοδοι που ανερυθρίαστα προτείνει ο µεγάλος φιλόσοφος προκαλούν συχνά το χαµόγελο του αναγνώστη. Φτάνοντας όµως στην κατακλείδα του κειµένου, αντιλαµβάνεται κανείς πως ό,τι προηγήθηκε µοιάζει εντέλει περισσότερο µε άσκηση ειρωνείας και έχει σκοπό να λειτουργήσει προειδοποιητικά: «Μετά βίας ένας στους εκατό ανθρώπους είναι άξιος να αντιπαρατεθείτε µαζί του.
